Hello, August -
We find ourselves in the midst of a power outage, now stretching into its third day. This week has been a testament to the continued resilience of Omahans as we navigate the aftermath of another destructive storm. While this newsletter arrives a day late, it has provided a welcome moment of creativity amidst the laborious tasks of clearing branches and salvaging food. Such disruptive events remind us of our reliance on life's simple pleasures...
Speaking of which, our vacation to Colorado last month provided much-needed respite.
The first two photos below capture a walk around Lily Lake, (Patrick and I got engaged on top of that mountain last year!) and a hike through Rocky Mountain National Park, where friendly ground squirrels frisked us for food.Returning to Omaha, we discovered a nest of baby bunnies in our backyard (photo 6), accompanied by a family of foxes that had claimed residence in our garden (photos 3 and 5). Naturally, this added to my nightly worries about the baby bunnies becoming a midnight snack for the fox family. (*Happy to report the bunnies are now out of the nest and there was no carnage on my watch).
Observing these critters and their primal instincts has been a meaningful reminder of the innate wisdom all beings possess. Every evening around 9 PM, the mama bunny would visit the nest (photo 4), the bunnies would nurse for a few minutes, and then they would all retreat back to the nest. The mama fox would lead her kits around the garden, fleeing over the fence when our dog approached. It is astounding how animals instinctively know how to care for themselves and their own. This serves as a reminder for us, as humans, to trust our instincts more. We are hardwired to connect, to protect ourselves, and to get needs met. Yet, our conscious minds often lead us astray from this inherent knowing - leading us down the rabbit hole of self doubt, imposter syndrome, judgment, and over-analysis.
Witnessing these precious animal families - guided purely by their instincts - has inspired me to seek greater attunement. Attunement to myself and to others—because within each of us already lies the wisdom we are looking for. Wishing everyone an attuned month ahead,
Lucy
